VOA/TEK Episode 44: Brain Study
VOA/TEK tells the story of a patient in a minimally conscious state who is participating in medical research at the Casa Colina Research Institute in Pomona, California. The program interviews his family, as well as the researchers and physicians conducting an ongoing clinical study on Disorders of Consciousness (DOCs). Researchers from Casa Colina and UCLA are working together to better understand the effectiveness of Low-Intensity Focused Ultrasound Pulsation (LIFUP) therapy on improving consciousness recovery and quality of life for patients who are experiencing DOCs after sustaining traumatic brain injuries.
Scripps Tech - Brain Interface Study
Moving objects using mind control sounds like something out of a science fiction story. But it’s happening now thanks to a collaboration between the Casa Colina Research Institute (CCRI), UCLA, and the California Institute of Technology. Scripps Tech visited Casa Colina’s Pomona campus to learn more about how their exciting Brain Computer Interface research is benefitting those with paralysis—like longtime study participant James Johnson, who teamed with CCRI shortly after suffering a spinal cord injury in 2017.
VOA/TEK interviews patients, therapists, and physicians at Casa Colina Hospital and Centers for Healthcare in Pomona, California, to understand the wide variation in outcomes for individuals with traumatic brain injuries.
Casa Colina Research Institute: Collaborative Partnerships for the Future
In partnership with the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and the California Institute of Technology, Casa Colina is conducting fascinating breakthrough research that explores how individuals with paralysis can control a computer using thought alone. The Casa Colina Research Institute conducts basic, translational, and clinical research to improve patient care and discover novel findings about disabilities.
