We're thrilled to celebrate Michele L. Alaniz, BCP, OTR/L, a certified occupational therapist and Director of the Casa Colina Children’s Services Center, for winning the prestigious 2024 NBCOT Innovation Award! Michele created a groundbreaking aquatic therapy program that is changing the lives of children with autism, making water activities safer and more accessible.
This unique program is not only innovative but also evidence based. Her structured approach, focused on swim skills and water safety, has demonstrated remarkable results. This is especially important as drowning is the primary cause of death among children with autism, representing 71% of fatalities, as reported by the National Autism Association. Children with autism who participate in this program show significant improvements in water confidence and skills within a short timeframe. What's more, this program goes beyond just swimming. It fosters social interaction, builds skills, and opens doors to recreational activities for these children, significantly enhancing their overall quality of life.
The impact of Michele's work extends far beyond our community. Her research has been published, allowing other therapists to replicate this successful model. She has also generously shared her expertise through training videos, educating pool staff on inclusivity for children with diverse abilities.
Congratulations to Michele for this well-deserved recognition! Her dedication to improving the lives of children with autism is truly inspiring.
