March 22 is World Coma Day, and the Casa Colina Research Institute is committed to improving clinical treatments for patients with coma and other Disorders of Consciousness (DOCs), which are the cause of grief for the family members of these patients and of great financial burden for medical systems.
Casa Colina's Assistant Director of Research, Dr. Caroline Schnakers, is an expert in DOCs and has been invited to speak at a World Coma Day event organized by Neurocritical Care Society. This talk will focus on the specifics of a behavioral diagnosis of coma and will also feature the story of a patient who was misdiagnosed for a long time as he suffered from locked-in syndrome (LIS), a rare neurological disorder characterized by complete paralysis of voluntary muscles, except for those that control the eyes.
