Casa Colina Brain Injury Researcher Joins Podcast to Discuss DOCs

Research shows that about 40% of patients with disorders of consciousness (DOCs) are misdiagnosed: often thought of as unconscious, many are, in fact, either conscious or minimally conscious. An expert in DOCs, Assistant Director of the Casa Colina Research Institute, Caroline Schnakers, PhD recently joined the podcast “Neurocareers: Doing the Impossible!” to discuss DOCs, addressing common misconceptions about coma and offering insight into how the latest neuro-technology is being used to benefit these patients. (Listen to the podcast.)

Dr. Schnakers’ research focuses on severely brain-injured patients recovering from coma and on the detection of conscious cognitive activity using behavioral and electro-physiological techniques. She recently organized a webinar on diagnosis and prognosis in Disorders of Consciousness for the International Brain Injury Association.
