Community Invited to Grand Opening Events in April
POMONA, Calif., April 4, 2016 — Casa Colina Hospital and Centers for Healthcare, a leading rehabilitation hospital and specialized healthcare service provider, is pleased to announce the opening of its new state-of-the-art Medical Surgical Wing, a 38,220-square-foot, highly technical expansion that will accommodate an 2,300 additional patients annually. It will also employ an additional 160 staff members at Casa Colina, an already-established Center of Excellence in medical and rehabilitation services. The Medical Surgical Wing opened on Friday, April 1, 2016.
“Casa Colina is thrilled to announce the opening of its much-awaited Medical Surgical Wing,” said Felice L. Loverso, PhD., president and CEO of Casa Colina Hospital and Centers for Healthcare. “For more than 75 years, Casa Colina has been highly regarded for its rehabilitation services, and we are proud of its recent ranking by Modern Healthcare as the 13th largest rehabilitation provider in the United States. With the new Medical Surgical Wing addition, Casa Colina will further meet its goals of providing the highest level of patient-centered medical and surgical care available anywhere in the region.”
With foresight in early 2015, Casa Colina announced its organization name change from Casa Colina Centers for Rehabilitation to Casa Colina Hospital and Centers for Healthcare in order to better reflect its breadth of specialized medical and surgical services now offered with the addition of the Medical Surgical Wing.
Casa Colina Hospital’s new Medical Surgical Wing is located adjacent to the existing Acute Rehabilitation Wing on its 20-acre Pomona, Calif. campus. Its offerings are the culmination of specialists and surgeons from top hospitals throughout the region and country, creating a preferred surgical facility for physicians who specialize in a wide range of procedures, from orthopedic and neurosurgery to gastroenterology, urology, and more. Features include three state-of-the-art surgical suites, a six-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 25 private medical/surgical beds with patient lift systems and private bathrooms, a procedure room, and much more.
Casa Colina’s three new spacious surgical suites are the highlight of the new addition, featuring the da Vinici® minimally invasive surgical system and Stryker MAKO robotic-arm-assisted surgery for orthopedics/total joint replacements. Ceiling-mounted booms hold surgical equipment, allowing staff to easily move and adjust devices during procedures, increasing accessibility and decreasing surgical time. Designed with six wall-mounted screens and two portable screens ranging from 42 inches to 52 inches, the surgical suites also allow the operating room team to display vital signs, radiological images, lab values, pertinent patient data, and images projected through endoscopic cameras. Ceiling-mounted and in-light cameras also allow the surgeons to use telemedicine to share procedures with other surgeons in real-time, allowing them to seek expert assistance from worldwide colleagues during complex procedures, if needed.
At the center of Casa Colina’s goals is the desire to provide patients with a comfortable and healing environment. Each of the 25 private patient rooms offers advanced telemetry, ensuring that physicians, nurses and staff can closely monitor patients, as well as a two-way communication between patients and nursing stations via closed-circuit 42-inch television monitors, which also offer DirecTV® for patient entertainment. Patient lift systems are installed in each room, allowing staff to safely assist in transferring patients to bathroom facilities if needed — with two of these private rooms designated for bariatric patients up to 550 pounds. With Wi-Fi® access in each room, patients are welcome to use their personal smartphones, tablets or computers to stay in touch with friends, loved ones and colleagues. A beautiful family day room, sun deck and garden courtyard for comfortable patient and family visits will also be offered.
Physicians can provide immediate specialized care with instant bedside access to each patient’s digital medical records, all securely archived in Casa Colina’s Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system. The Medical Surgical Wing offers a blood bank, an expanded hospital laboratory, adjacent diagnostic imaging services and access to a complete continuum of other medical and rehabilitation services, if appropriate for the patient’s recovery.
Casa Colina’s new facilities align with its vision to lead and continuously redefine a patient-centered approach for those requiring highly specialized, medically driven levels of care. For the latest updates on Casa Colina Hospital and Centers for Healthcare, visit www.casacolina.org.

About Casa Colina Hospital and Centers for Healthcare
Casa Colina Hospital and Centers for Healthcare was founded in 1936 in Chino, Calif., under the leadership of Frances Eleanor "Mother" Smith and other community leaders and physicians to provide rehabilitative care to children with polio. In the early 1950s, when polio was at epidemic proportions, a plan was developed to build a new hospital in nearby Pomona, Calif. In 1959, the new hospital was completed, and Casa Colina expanded its medical and physical rehabilitation services to concentrate on treating people of all ages and disabilities resulting from neurological and/or orthopedic conditions. In recent years, Casa Colina has renovated its entire 20-acre Pomona campus to build a continuum of rehabilitative and medical care unmatched in the Western United States. Casa Colina was recognized by Modern Healthcare in 2015 as the 13th largest rehabilitation provider in the United States. Services offered to the community include a state-of-the-art acute rehabilitation hospital, outpatient center, post-acute residential rehabilitation center, children's services, adult day health care, specialized physician clinics, diagnostic imaging, ambulatory surgery center, outdoor recreation program, a medical office building, and other highly specialized services. The new Casa Colina Hospital Medical Surgical Wing Medical opened to the community on April 1, 2016. For more information, please visit www.casacolina.org.
